EPIDEMIOLOGICAL BULLETIN (01/06/2020)
Map 10/06
It was from the spatial visualization of indigenous lands in the state of Maranhão that we began our work of mapping the arrival of the new coronavirus among indigenous peoples. Understanding this space as a set of interactions that exist between different social groups that inhabit territories juxtaposed by legal-administrative lines that delimit indigenous lands and municipalities, we seek to understand the extent to which these relationships affect indigenous peoples with regard to the Covidean pandemic. 19. To this end, the maps presented here, created in partnership with the Cartography Novo Olhar Group and NEABI, are an initial and potential analysis tool. We hope to rely on information from indigenous lands and territories to understand how indigenous people have faced the precarious nature of the indigenous health structure and suffered from the impacts of the new coronavirus.
On the last day of June 14, 2020, we published in a table and graph format, data from the survey carried out with the health departments of municipalities in the state of Maranhão, which recorded the indigenous cases of Covid-19 in their bulletins, until June 10, 2020. The first map, created in partnership with the Cartography Novo Olhar Group, shows the advance in the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the municipalities of Maranhão that affect the TIs. The second was prepared by Professor Fredson Anderson Brito de Castro, a member of the IFMA / Campus Coelho Neto Center for Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous Studies (NEABI) who, using data from the (CO) VIDA Network, prepared the Spatial Distribution of confirmed cases from Covid -19 in the indigenous peoples of Maranhão. On the map we can have a dimension of the municipalities that focus on Indigenous Lands (TIs) and the increase in the number of notified cases of the new coronavirus in these areas. The TIs that appear on the map are those already demarcated, based on IBGE data from 2019. We reiterate that, of the nine municipalities that register cases of Covid-19 in indigenous peoples, only the municipality of Amarante do Maranhão brings these records by IT, like the TIs Arariboia and Governador, but without specifying the people. The others present the records by more generic designations (Area and / or Indigenous Zone) or pointing only to the Villages, without specifying the IT to which they belong or which people are affected by the virus.
